Chikwenya in Mana Pools National Park has to have one of the most beautiful sites for a camp anywhere in South Africa. The main focus at Chikwenya is the tranquil Zambezi River, its open floodplain, Chikwenya Island and Mana Pools wonderful wildlife. It is a photographer’s paradise as tall attractive acacia trees dot the open floodplains, with the mountains of the Rift Valley providing the backdrop.

The area is renowned for its large numbers of Elephant, Buffalo, Hippo, Lion, and Eland, which concentrate along the river when the waterholes inland dry up. Buffalo graze along the river’s edges and Elephant love the Acacia albida forests. Leopard are common, although the yare no seen as often as Lion. Birdlife is superb and many species are found here. The Angola Pitta is a birder’s top prize. These birds nest in the area from mid November. Shelley’s Sunbird, Narina Trogon, Livingstone’s Flycatcher and Western Banded Snake Eagle are some of the specials.

Our activities focus on enjoying the game viewing in open 4x4 vehicles, in boats, on foot, from hides and in canoes. The camp has nine tented rooms with en-suite facilities, as well as either an additional outdoor shower or bath “under the stars”. Each room has a panoramic view onto the floodplains of the Zambezi. One can lie in bed and watch Elephant and Buffalo stroll past. There is a pub and lounge under thatch. Breakfasts are enjoyed outdoors under the shade of an enormous mahogany tree and dinners are often on deck under the starts. There is a pool.
